5 Easy DIY Gift Ideas

(this post contains affiliate links)

I can’t believe it’s December 1st already. I feel like November flew by! But that’s ok because that means it’s now the best time of the year: the holiDIY season!

I have quite the bit of Christmas content coming your way the next 2 weeks. Today I thought I’d start with some DIY gift ideas.

There’s nothing better than receiving a homemade gift. Especially when the gift doesn’t look too homemade (you know what I mean). So I’ve compiled a few DIY gift ideas that pair really well with a few store-bought ideas too.

The video right below has all the tutorials for the DIY projects. Then under the video, you’ll find links to some of the specific things I use and mention to make your Christmas shopping a little easier!

1) Gifts for: Homebodies

Cozy gift for homebodies and people who like staying home

This is the gift for that person you know who loves to stay in and stay cozy (aka: me). Honestly what’s better than a warm blanket and socks?

Here’s supplies you need to make the tassel blanket:

  • Throw blanket in the color of your choice — I like this one off amazon or this one from Ikea

  • Yarn in a coordinating color to the blanket (you’ll need at least 2 skeins) — I used this one here

  • Scissors

  • Needle and thread

  • Tassel pattern (just scrap card stock cut to 8.75” in height works)

Ideas to go along with the DIY blanket:

  • Coffee mug (paired with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee) — I found mine at TJ Maxx, here’s a few others I like one, two, three

  • Fuzzy socks — I actually found that cute grey pair at Dollar Tree

  • Candle

  • Baked goods or candy

  • Pajamas — Old Navy is a great place to shop for Christmas PJs!

  • A book or DVD

  • A list of Netflix recommendations

2) Gifts for: Pet Parents

A DIY gift for the pet owner in your life

We all have a pet parent in our life. You know exactly who I’m talking about right now. So why not treat your human friend and their furry friend to a sweet little Christmas gift.

The supplies you’ll need for the frame:

  • Wood frame — Easily found in the wood crafts section at craft store

  • Wood letters — Also found in wood crafts section

  • A photo of your gift recipient’s pet

  • Paint

  • Painter’s tape

  • Hot glue

  • Paint brushes

More gifts to go with the frame:

  • A new toy

  • A collar or leash

  • The pet’s favorite treat

  • A custom dog tag (there’s usually kiosks at places like Walmart) — OR this adorable best friend necklace and tag I found on Amazon

  • Stylish food and water dishes

  • Any sort of item that resembles their pet — see these examples: one, two, three

3) Gifts for: Artists

A DIY gift for an aritist, crafter or creative

This gift idea is for anyone who loves art and crafting. Why not give that person something they’ll love and use (or at least add to their growing supplies stash… which from personal experience, is just as great)

What you’ll need for the paint water mug:

  • A plain white mug — go to Dollar Tree for this!

  • 2-3 colors of nail polish

  • A non-permanent marker

  • Black puffy paint

  • (and a disposable bowl full of water and some toothpicks)

4) Gifts for: People Who Love to Bake

A gift for someone who loves to bake, baker gift ideas

This is a sweet little gift (literally) for anyone who enjoys baking or desserts. It’s best if you can share a recipe you have, but if they’re not a serious baker, a boxed mix works too.

What you need for the DIY:

  • All the dry ingredients of your recipe

  • Food-safe clear cellophane bags — can usually be found in party aisle or in baking aisle at a craft store

  • A note card/card stock

  • Supplies to decorate the recipe card (if you want)

  • Wooden spoon — I found mine at the Dollar Tree

  • Cookie cutters — can be found anywhere this time of year

  • Tea towel

  • String

5) Gifts for: Fitness Friends

DIY gift for people who love the gym, fitness, working out

This final idea is for those people you know who can’t stay out of the gym. Or maybe give it to someone who is going to set “get in shape” as the New Years resolution to get them motivated!

What I used to make the bag:

  • Four fabric fat quarters in coordinating colors (two of each color) — go to Joann Fabrics for a huge selection (Walmart has some options too)

  • 1 spool of black cotton cord - refer to video, I can’t seem to find it online to link it (but I bought it at Joann’s)

  • Sewing matching, matching thread, straight pins

Things you can add on with this gift:

  • Water bottle

  • Protein bars

  • Ear buds

  • Yoga mat
